John Murphy '88 has been involved with Gilmour Academy baseball for more than 29 years as both a coach and a player. He first stepped into the coaching role in 1993 under then-head coach Ray Sharnsky and has been a part of the coaching staff ever since with the exception of the two years he took off in 1994 and 1995 to attend law school in Michigan. Under Sharnsky, he was a part of the program that sent five teams to the regional tournament and had one state semifinal appearance in 2008. The 2008 team also set a school record for most wins in a season with 25. Overall, the Lancers earned more than 300 wins during that time. Upon Sharnsky’s retirement from coaching, Murphy assumed the same responsibilities under Head Coach Jay Fowler and has since been a part of an additional 90 wins and two more regional appearances.

Murphy played for Gilmour from 1985-88 and was an outfielder for the team that won three Southeast Conference championships. In his final two seasons as a Lancer, the team went 40-10 and he was named News-Herald Honorable Mention.

Upon graduation from Gilmour, Murphy earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and a J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. He is currently one of the owners at the National Asbestos Litigation firm of Kelley & Ferraro, LLP. He is a member of the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association, the Greater Cleveland Baseball Coaches Association, the Northeast Ohio Baseball Coaches Association, the Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania State Bar Associations and the Million Dollar Advocates Forum. He has been recognized as an Ohio Super Lawyer 12 times, named to the top 100 civil plantiff attorneys by the National Trial Lawyers and was nominated as a board member of the Cleveland Baseball Federation. He served 10 years as commissioner of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Associations Young Lawyer’s Softball League.

Murphy currently resides in Orange Village, Ohio, with his wife of 23 years, Amy '88. They have four children: Michael '16, Molly '18, Megan '19 and youngest son Paddy '23.
