The Gilmour Academy Varsity A boys hockey team went 3-0 over the weekend, including a 3-2 overtime victory against St. Edward High School, who is the top-ranked team in the state according to the Ohio Coach's poll.
The Varsity A team's incredible weekend began Friday, January 29 at OBM Arena, as the Lancers faced off against Padua. Gilmour dominated play throughout the duration of the contest, and defeated the Bruins 5-1. Jack Popovich '22, Joe Roddy '21, Kessel Richards '21, Alex Young '21 and Rocco Hice '23 all scored goals for the Lancers.
Gilmour then hosted top-ranked St. Edward on Saturday, January 30. After the Eagles scored a goal within a minute of the puck dropping in the first period, the Lancers found their stride and tied the game 1-1 off a goal by Roddy with approximately six minutes left in the first period. Roddy then found Richards, who scored late in the second period, and gave the Lancers a 2-1 lead going into the third period. The Varsity A team held onto that lead until the final minute of the game, when the Eagles tied it up at 2-2, and forced the game into overtime. Gilmour had a few great shots on goal in overtime, including one from Frankie Valenti '21, who scored the game-winner, making the final score 3-2 in favor of the Lancers.
After such an emotional victory over the St. Edward Eagles, the Lancers suited up the next day to compete against another Great Lakes Hockey League opponent - Holy Name. The Varsity A team defeated the Green Wave 4-2, and Jakub Sedlacik '22, Geno Oprisiu '21, Zach Mangel '21 and Young all scored for the Lancers.
Head coach John Malloy reflected on the team's successful weekend, including their hard- fought win against St. Edward.
"My staff and I have been really pleased with the progress the team has been making and this weekend was a good opportunity to showcase that improvement. Of course the victory over St. Edward was special. Anytime you beat the consensus No. 1 team, it is something for the players to hang their helmets on. It was truly a full-team effort and each player deserves congratulations. I am very proud of the way they played as a team," said Malloy.
