Bob Beutel is in his 12th season with the Gilmour Academy girls basketball program, during which time he has directed the Lancers to a 209-63 overall record with 10 district tournament appearances, including three district championships and five district runner-up finishes. His team also made it to the regional semifinals in 2009 and was a Sweet Sixteen participant in 2010. Just last season, the Lancers made it further than any team in program history, as a Division III State Semifinalist. He became a member of the 500-Career Win Club after defeating Geneva High School, 52-43, on Jan. 30, 2008 and then reached win number 600 on Feb. 4, 2013 with a 57-27 win against Cleveland Central Catholic. In his previous 36-years of coaching high school basketball, his teams have amassed an overall record of 670-197. His accomplishments in the high school basketball arena led to his 2004 induction into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame.
A beacon in the local girls basketball world, he was the head coach of the Eastlake North High School varsity girls basketball program for 25 years. His Ranger teams compiled an overall record of 461-134 with 12 district titles and two state tournament Final Four appearances. The 2000 Associated Press Division I Coach of the Year coached the North/South All-Star Game and the first Ohio-West Va. All-Star Game. While at North High, Beutel served as an assistant with the football program for 25 seasons, the track program for 13 seasons and boys basketball for five seasons. He was also the head coach of the North track program for two years and a quarterbacks and wide receiver coach at John Carroll University for one year.
In high school, Beutel earned All-Ohio status in both basketball and football. Despite being heavily recruited to play basketball at The Ohio State University, he opted to play football at Northwestern University where he earned such honors as All-Big Ten and ABC National Player of the Week. He led the team in tackles one season and ranked third in the category in the Big Ten.
He has a bachelor’s degree in education and is a retired high school teacher. The Willowick, Ohio, native currently lives in Chardon, Ohio, with his wife of 20 years, Claudia who is a member of the Gilmour coaching staff. He has two daughters, Britt and Brooke.
